NEW THIS YEAR: We have combined the Half Marathon Non-Competitive Walk and the Half Marathon Run into the Half Marathon Run/Walk. We want to stress that we are not preventing you from walking the course, as long as you meet the time requirements below. If you are an experienced, serious walker who would like to walk the entire course in a competitive environment, please enter the “Half Marathon Competitive Walk” division.  If you are new to the sport, or if you would like to alternate jogging and walking, we ask that you sign up for the “Half Marathon Run/Walk” event.  Entry fees, packet pick-up and time requirements remain the same for both divisions.

Time Requirements

You must be able to complete the half marathon in four hours, either running or walking, from the time the “Last Chance Pacer” crosses the start line. We will close the half marathon course at 11:35 AM.

We consider our events “competitive”, and not simply as fun runs or walks.  A “Last Chance Pacer” will be provided for your events.  These pacers will travel at the average pace needed to cross the finish line at four hours. Your progress will be monitored throughout the race. If you fall significantly behind the “Last Chance Pacer”, you will be given fair warning to pick up the pace. If you can’t keep pace, you will be required to board a bus following the pacers to be transported back to the start-finish area.

We are fortunate to offer two international border crossings during the course of our event. To continue providing this unique opportunity, we MUST re-open the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel to vehicular traffic at 10:00 AM. To ensure your safety and to meet all time limits, we have established the following milestones:

Half Marathon Run/Walk

1.85 Mile Mark (Bridge Entrance)……….…..8:08 AM
6.9 Mile Mark (Tunnel Entrance)…………....9:37 AM
8.1 Mile Mark (Tunnel Exit)……………….…10:00 AM
Finish Line…………………………………….....11:35 AM

NOTE: If at any time, you fall behind these milestone times, you may be required to board a bus to be transported back to the start/finish area.

Competitive Walk

If you are registering for this division you are expected to walk the entire distance of the half marathon. Completion of the course is on the honor system. We will provide a colored bib-back that reads "Walker" that you must have pinned to the outer-most layer of your clothing at all times. This will identify you to other competitive walkers competing in this division. If you are caught running any portion of the course, you will be disqualified.

Age-group awards are presented in both the Half Marathon Run/Walk and the Half Marathon Competitive Walk divisions. (click here for awards )

Homeland Security Requirements

These are international events - you will be crossing international borders. Therefore, we must adhere to all federal laws governing entry and exit to foreign countries.  On June 1, 2009 more stringent requirements for border crossings in North America were implemented.  In order to maintain the privilege of crossing borders, all participants must show up in person and provide proof of identity and citizenship in order to receive your race number and packet. For the majority of participants (U.S. and Canadian citizens 16 years of age and older), this means a passport, passport card or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security. U.S. and Canadian citizen children under the age of 16 will be able to present the original or copy of their birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization or citizenship card.   For additional acceptable documentation click here. There are no exceptions. Please make certain your travel arrangements include ample time to make it to the expo.

Half Marathon Pace Teams

  • Want to run with a group?
  • Hope to finish within a certain time?
  • Trying to qualify for Boston?

If you need more information, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about pacers.

International Requirements
All half-marathon divisions are international events crossing the US/Canadian border twice. It is a privilege and an honor to use the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Do not drop articles of clothing, water bottles, tissue, or paper cups as you run across these prestigious landmarks.

It is imperative that you accurately complete all information on the registration form, including date of birth, citizenship, and green card information (if applicable). All registrations are submitted to the Department of Homeland Security for pre-approval. For further requirements and restrictions click.

Rules of Fair Play

We conduct our events under USA Track & Field (USATF) guidelines. We will use a qualified referee to help us settle any results concerns. We may exclude from competition anyone who has previously discredited themselves and the sport of running, or we may disqualify anyone who knowingly exhibits unsportsmanlike conduct.
