Important Homeland Security Regulations
We are fortunate to offer two international border crossings during the course of our event. All entries are submitted to the Bureau of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), for clearance before the race. ALL participants must show up in person at the Health & Fitness Expo, and present a passport or enhanced drivers license in order to pick up your race packet. For details on acceptable documentation and additional requirements, click here. There are NO exceptions.
You must be able to complete the marathon in six and a half hours from the time the “Last Chance Pacer” crosses the start line. We will close the marathon course at 2:05 PM.
We consider our events “competitive”, and not simply as fun runs or walks. A “Last Chance Pacer” will be provided for your event. These pacers will travel at the average pace needed to cross the finish line at six and a half hours. Your progress will be monitored throughout the race. If you fall significantly behind the “Last Chance Pacer”, you will be given fair warning to pick up the pace. If you can’t keep pace, you will be required to board a bus following the pacers to be transported back to the start-finish area.
To continue providing the unique opportunity of crossing the border twice, we MUST re-open the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel to vehicular traffic at 10:00 AM. To ensure your safety and to meet all time limits, we have established the following milestones:
Marathon and 5-Person Relay
1.85 Mile Mark (Bridge Entrance)……….….8:02 AM
6.9 Mile Mark (Tunnel Entrance)……….…..9:14 AM
8.1 Mile Mark (Tunnel Exit)……………….…..9:35 AM
12.7 Mile Mark (Campus Martius)………….10:44 AM
13.1 Mile Mark………………………………….…10:50 AM
16 Mile Mark……………………………………….11:33 AM
18 Mile Mark……………………………………….12:47 PM
23 Mile Mark…………………………………………1:17 PM
Finish Line…………………………………………….2:05 PM
NOTE: If at any time, you fall behind these milestone times, you may be required to board a bus to be transported back to the start-finish area.
Marathon Pace Teams
- Want to run with a group?
- Hope to finish within a certain time?
- Trying to qualify for Boston?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, consider signing up for our Pace Team service at the Health & Fitness Expo. For more information about Pace Teams, click here.
Competitive Walk
The competitive walk operates on an honor system. The only requirement is that you must walk the entire distance, in any form of walk you choose. You will wear a second bib identifying you as a walker. If a particpant who enters the walk is caught running by anyone on or along the course, they will be disqualified.
About the Course
Our marathon course offers international appeal traversing both downtown Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, crossing the border at both the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. You will run through historic neighborhoods, around beautiful Belle Isle, and along the spectacular RiverWalk. The shared start-finish area on W. Fort St. at Second Ave., near Detroit Free Press operations, has enabled organizers to combine resources and improve runner and spectator experiences alike.
With a wave start, smaller groups of participants are sent off at two-minute intervals beginning at 7:15 AM, which eases congestion in those early miles. Groups are based on the projected pace indicated on the registration form, so an accurate response is necessary.
Barring last minute changes due to unforeseen construction or other factors, the 2010 course should remain the same as 2009. To see the 2010 marathon course map, click here.
PLEASE NOTE: There are several construction projects in progress along the course, notably at the bridges over the Dequindre Cut at E. Lafayette (13.5 mile mark) and E. Larned (1.6 mile mark- 5k course), and along Atwater St (24.5 mile mark). All projects are scheduled to complete before race weekend. In the event they do not, we have detours planned and ready to go. Stay tuned to our website, and the Facebook and Twitter accounts for updates.

Proof of Identity and Citizenship
It is each participant’s responsibility to provide proper documentation.
For the majority of participants (U.S. and Canadian citizens over 16 years of age and older), proof of citizenship means a passport, passport card or enhanced drivers license. U.S. and Canadian citizen children under 16 will be expected to present a birth certificate, naturalization card or passport. For additional acceptable documentation, click here.
If you are not a citizen of the U.S. or Canada, it is strongly recommended that all travelers verify the specific documentary requirements of both your country of residence and the countries you will be visiting. For additional information, click here.
Nuclear (Radiation) Medicine Procedure:
If you are participating in the Marathon, and have had a Nuclear (Radiation) Medicine Procedure Recently:
Please identify yourself to our volunteers when you pick up your number. If you are unsure, please ask and we will seek the opinion of CBP officers! CBP employs a wide array of Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) technology to serve as a force multiplier and to complement the work of CBP officers in guarding America. These technologies serve a vital function in day-to-day vehicles, trucks, cargo containers and baggage, at our borders and ports of entry. The Radiation Portal Monitor is a detection device that provides CBP with a passive, non-intrusive means to screen conveyances for radiation emanating from various sources, including natural sources and isotopes commonly used in medicine and industry. If any participants in the marathon have recently had medical procedures completed, there is a chance that they may trigger the portal alarms.
Start Times
Because we utilize a wave start, marathon (including relay) and half marathon participants will not be segregated. Each participant will be seeded by the projected pace they reported when registering. Thus a faster half marathon walker might be starting beside a slower marathon runner in the same corral (wave). ALL participants must be in their assigned wave before the start at 7:15 AM.
7:13 AM- Wheelchair/Hand Cycle Division
7:15 AM- Marathon, Half Marathon Run/Walk and 5-Person Relay
Rules of Fair Play
We conduct our events under USA Track & Field (USATF) guidelines. We will use a qualified referee to help us settle any results concerns. We may exclude from competition anyone who has previously discredited themselves and the sport of running, or we may disqualify anyone who knowingly exhibits unsportsmanlike conduct.
Cancellation Policy
Entry fees are non-refundable. Entries are non-transferable to another person or event. That means that once we receive and accept your entry, you will not receive a refund if you cannot participate. You may not transfer your entry to another participant, another event, or to another year. Since the events are international, it is a federal offense to cross borders illegally. Therefore, do not give your number to another person. It is each participant’s responsibility to provide proper documentation for picking up your packet.
The Marathon, in accordance with management executives, city officials and local law enforcement has the authority to cancel any of the events for emergency purposes such as, but not limited to, inclement weather or threat of terrorism. If such emergency conditions force cancellation, refunds cannot be provided since funds will have been spent in preparation for Race Day. T-shirts will be distributed.
